Ideas for Calla Lilly Wedding bouquets and Centerpieces

calla lilly wedding bouquets "Calla" doesn't mean "white" anymore, though. And even brides who love tradition are going nuts for the deep hues of mini-callas in shades like mango, gold and burgundy.

Here are some interesting treatments we're seeing:

Callas and bare-branch arrangements combined (tall, imposing, great for Asian-tinged or contemporary autumn weddings).

Callas are costly, so they're used more sparingly than some other blooms. Expect to pay almost $5 a stem for the big, traditional kind, even if you're buying in bulk. Mini-callas come cheaper: close to $2.50 or $3 per stem.

Partly due to expense, callas tend to draw DIY'ers. They're relatively sturdy. They're available all year round. They enjoy a long vase life, and they're simple to prepare (especially compared to fussy, wilt-prone flowers like hydrangeas, tulips or shasta daisies).

But keep in mind that mini-callas — the kinds with color — are just that. Mini.

More than a few brides ordered their callas online ... and were a little shocked when they found those mango beauties on their doorstep smaller than they imagined.

The sky's the limit when it comes to color choices for minis, but if you need really big blooms for things like tower vases and centerpieces, you'll want to stick to white (minis come in white too, though, so be careful).

Mango mini-callas with black magic roses. Combined with hypericum berries, it's a super-dramatic fall look.

Calla lilies sure have legs when it comes to wedding trends. In fact, they're not really a trend ... they're more of an institution.

Why? Because calla lilies express major directions in fashion ... and weddings. The body-conscious wedding gowns, the emphasis on fine fabrics, the movement toward a stripped-down look in wedding cakes  ... all these sit square in the center of the modern white wedding. Right next to our favorite bloom!

As a result, callas appeal to brides who prefer to push the envelope,   who love all things traditional ... or as we focus on here,  who are brave enough to do-it-yourself!

Autumn is visually a glorious time of year when you can feast your eyes on the changing colours from green to amber, yellow, red and orange. The temperatures might be dropping and the days getting shorter, but this seems to help intensify those deep shades, as the foliage dies. If you are lucky enough to have a wedding during this picturesque time of year it would be a shame not to take advantage of these beautiful colours and use them to make a beautiful autumn wedding bouquet.

Do not try and use unseasonal flowers for your wedding bouquet, this will give you added expense and effort in trying to get a summery or spring feel to your wedding. The bouquet should incorporate lots of greens and deep browns and flowers that are readily available at this time of year. Trust your imagination and come up with some truly memorable combinations of colours for your autumn wedding bouquet. The calla lily bridal bouquet is the best gifted flower bouquet.

It is a nice idea to choose seasonal shades for your wedding, to create a stunning visual effect.

» Spring ¡V White, paler shade of pinks, yellow, blues, lilac, and greens

» Summer ¡VRich Vibrant colors such as yellow, orange, red, pink, gold, hazy purple and green

» Autumn - Shades of brown, yellow, gold, cream, russet (reddish-brown), burnt orange and red.

» Winter - Forest green, strong dark red, russet, orange, gold, and snow white or ultra modern like silver and ice blue.

The Victorian influence is also becoming more popular. Flowers with inert meanings and romantic, soft colored blooms are also becoming a rage.

Autumn Beautiful Calla Lily Wedding Bouquet

calla lilly autumn wedding It's simple: the calla lily is the epitome of elegance. If your venue was the set of Breakfast at Tiffany's, the calla lily would be Audrey Hepburn; if it was Monaco's pink palace, the calla would be Grace Kelly in a taffeta gown.

All fresh flowers are beautiful, but few offer the elegance and versatility of the calla.

Maybe you've thought of designing your own wedding bouquets, centerpieces or altar arrangements. In that case, the calla can provide all the style, color and beauty you've ever dreamed of.

One simply has to glance at a white calla to think of weddings. It occupies a strangely rich space that's both classic and totally modern. Fortunately, beautiful calla lily bouquets are easy to fashion yourself.

This beautiful bouquet, combining full-sized and mini callas, offers great visual depth and dimension. To create it yourself, place five full-sized white calla lilies in the palm of your hand. Arrange the flowers into a rough arrow shape, with the middle flower being the tallest, and the rest gently sloping down. Now continue to fill out the arrow shape by adding eight mini calla lilies in pink, red, or yellow.

To finish the bouquet, gently close the palm of your hand to bring the stems together and tie off with floral tape. Complete the look by wrapping the stems with a wide satin ribbon of your choice.

Many brides are adding a touch of color to their bouquets by choosing from a number of brightly colored calla lilies that range from bright yellow to deep burgundy. For an autumn wedding, combine dark yellow calla lilies with orange-hued roses, or make bouquet from golden orange lilies tied together with raffia. For a romantic effect, make a bouquet from 12” long wine colored stems. A bouquet made of dark purple calla lilies is perfect for a winter wedding, especially when combined with dark pink mini calla lilies. To add a touch of whimsy, bundle together white calla lilies and add a ring of grape hyacinth or dark pink roses to accent the white lilies. For a spring wedding, bundle together two colors of yellow calla lilies, with the darker lilies (such as gold rush or millennium gold lilies) in the center and the lighter lilies (such as lemon chiffon lilies) circling the darker lilies. Alternatively, combine white mini calla lilies with calla lilies of a different shade, such as amethyst (a beautiful shade of purple) or cherry chiffon (a bubble-gum pink) for a colorful touch. No matter which option you choose, you are sure to have a beautifully elegant bouquet that matches your unique style!

Calla lilies are a classic wedding flower for a bride who wants to portray simple elegance. Traditionally, white calla lilies have been the classic choice; however, the current availability of callas in a wide variety of colors opens up a number of bouquet options. Many brides opt for the classic look of white calla lilies tied together with a sheer white ribbon and carried cradled in the left arm during the processional. While other flowers, such as roses and gardenias, often require filler to give the bouquet greater volume, calla bouquets can stand alone with just the lilies to comprise the bouquet. The following bouquet options can be made at home or by a florist, and offer a few new options for this classic wedding bouquet flower.

For a wedding bouquet that screams elegance and sophistication, choose several (5-8) long-stemmed white or ivory calla lilies. Cut the stem so that the blossoms are of slightly varying length, and collect the flowers with a sheer white ribbon tied into a bow. This type of bouquet should be carried cradled horizontally in the bride’s left arm during the processional. For a truly dramatic look, use long-stemmed calla lilies with stems that are several feet long and cut to different lengths, so that the flowers drape over the bride’s arm. To make attendant’s bouquets, use a similar method but choose fewer flowers (3-5), or give each bridesmaid a single calla lily with a sheer white ribbon bow tied around the stem. For a more structured look, use white mini calla lilies to make your bouquets. For this look, cut 8-12 mini call lilies at a 10-12” stem length, then wrap them tightly together using green florist tape that is then covered with a sheer white ribbon tied into a bow. For the bridesmaid bouquets, use a similar method to tie together smaller versions of the same bouquet (3-8 flowers).

For the boutonnieres, choose min calla lilies that are the same color as the blossoms in the bride’s bouquet. Use 3 mini lilies staggered vertically for the groom’s boutonniere, and a single lily for each of the groomsmen.
